WE BELIEVE IN CINEMA. Yeah the mark up on popcorn, snacks, and drinks is absolutely outrageous, but the picture, quality, and social experience that a trip to the cinema entails really makes it a decent way to spend little under a tenner. There’s a slew of good looking movies on the horizon as well, so we thought we’d try to give you a heads up with the six below – We’ll be checking them an’ all.
Nightcrawler – Dan Gilroy / ( 31st October 2014 )
Jake Gylennhaal seems to have been keeping pretty quiet recently, but he’s popped back up for what promises to be a tense and gripping news-related drama. Gilroy’s directorial debut promises to be both exciting and intelligent. It looks like it’s going to ask some tough questions regarding the ethics and morality of media and news reporting – questions that couldn’t be more pertinent in the wake of recent hacking scandals, and in the Rupert Murdoch and Fox News age. Interstellar – Christopher Nolan / ( 5th November (U.S) 7th November (U.K )
After killing it recently with Inception and the Dark Knight trilogy, plus having quality films like memento in his filmography, Christopher Nolan’s latest cinematic endeavour looks massive. Interstellar sees Nolan team up with the recently reinvented Matthew Mcconaughey of critically acalimed Dallas Buyers Club fame. We’re excited for this one – peep the trailer below.
Inherent Vice – Paul Thomas Anderson / (12th December (limited) 9th January (wide)
The release of this picture has been met with equal parts excitement and scepticism. Paul Thomas Anderson, director of previous critically acclaimed resounding successes such as There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Magnolia, is back adapt the notoriously low-key Thomas Pynchon’s work. Anderson is no stranger to making films with big names, so its no surprise to see Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Benecio Del Toro and Reese Witherspoon among the cast in this one. Though there may be some resistance against the idea of adapting Pynchon’s work (due in part to the air of mystery forced on him by public and press alike), this comic Neo-Noir-ish detective thriller looks to have the makings of a cult classic. Keep your eyes peeled for this one!
Foxcatcher – Bennett Miller / ( 14th November 2014 )
This film looks sick. Foxcatcher has an intense, dark, brooding psychological thriller vibe about it. From the trailer alone Steve Carrell’s creepiness is palpable, and it’s exciting to see him out of the comedy roles he’s almost been boxed into; it looks like he is about to show some serious acting pedigree. People are already tipping him for an Oscar. Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo also look like they’ve put in some stellar performances. Keep an eye out for this one.
The Imitation Game – Morten Tyldum ( 14th November 2014 )
Benedict Cumberbatch and Kiera Knightley star in this cerebral drama concerning the secret coding and cypher wars of Wolrd War Two. Cumberbatch takes on the role of mathematical genius and Grandfather of computer theory and science Alan Turing, who was been tasked with cracking the ‘unbreakable’ German coding machine ‘Enigma’. This one looks smart, tense, and intriguing.
Exodus: Gods and Kings – Ridley Scott / ( 12th December 2014 )
The man that brought us Alien, Blade Runner, American Gangster, and Prometheus is back with this biblical excursion. We don’t like to use the word ‘epic’ that much, but we can really think of no other way to describe how this one looks- it truly is an epic of biblical proportions! Christian Bale stars as Moses (which we think is a bit weird…) but with some big names and a trusted director at the helm, we think this might have the makings of one of the better Blockbusters. Then again, Alexander and Noah didn’t get that far did they…
